The household travel survey is the backbone of urban travel demand analysis. Over the years, survey methods and technologies have undergone many evolutions, including the creation of telephone and web-based methodologies as well as the inclusion of GPS-tracking-based travel diaries. One of the latest developments in survey technology is the usage of smartphones to collect data, as they are widespread and are adept at tracking travel parameters. This thesis presents the development of a novel smartphone-based travel diary tool, associated survey design, and a field test in Toronto. The collected smartphone data is examined in detail and compared to traditional self-reported travel survey data. Additionally, the data will correct biases in a self-reported travel survey following a core-satellite survey pattern.
