After the disruption caused by COVID-19 on travel worldwide, American travel trends stepped into a relative stabilization since around March 2021. The U.S. government is actively releasing funding for COVID-19 long-term recovery and infrastructure development. However, there is limited understanding of the stabilized travel trends among Americans and how travel behavior varies across communities under different environment features. The first study examines Americans' travel changes and their relatively stabilized travel from March 2021 to February 2022 in six travel dimensions: the number of visits to Points of Interest (POIs), dwell time at POIs, distance from homes to POIs, and trip time of day during three daily periods: 6 am to 3 pm, 3 pm to 7 pm, and 7 pm to 12 am. The second and third studies explore the associations between the adapted travel across these dimensions and 23 social vulnerability factors, as well as 19 built environment factors. The first study demonstrates that Americans have adopted new travel patterns following COVID-19. The number of visits to POIs has returned to, and even slightly surpassed, pre-pandemic levels. Notably, people in the Southeast show increased visits. Across the U.S., dwell time at POIs has decreased, while traveled distances have increased. People in the southern U.S. exhibit shorter dwell time, while Americans' traveled distances are similar throughout the country. The second study reveals that counties with higher concentrations of older adults have a stronger negative correlation with the number of visits to POIs. Furthermore, crowded living situations are associated with increased trips and longer dwell time at POIs, whereas more people living alone are associated with fewer and shorter trips. The third study confirms that residents of multi-unit housing in Manhattan and the Bronx spend significant time in locations with higher employment density. In the Bronx, areas with higher density of recreational facilities and open spaces positively correlate with Americans' number of visits and dwell time. Conversely, Manhattan residents spend less time in recreational facilities and open spaces, likely due to their busy lifestyles. These findings can help guide resource allocation, as well as facility and service provision, to reduce community inequalities and foster equitable and sustainable development in society in the long run of COVID-19 recovery.
