In this study, I examined the relationship between selected mother and child characteristics, the mother-child relationship, and child cognitive outcomes when infants were both 12 and 18 months of age. Subjects included 51 mother-infant pairs who were enrolled in the University of Virginia's Play and Child Development Project. While authors represented in both the theoretical and empirical literature have addressed the relationship between maternal characteristics and infant development, much recent research in this area has focused on face to face interaction measures between mothers and their children. In this study, more diverse measures such as parental reports of both self and child characteristics, samples of mother-child interaction, and measures of infants' and mothers' cognitive abilities were used to evaluate these relationships during the infants' second year of life. Correlations between variables were calculated, and a path model which pictorially described various hypothesized causal relationships was constructed and evaluated. Results demonstrated that at 12 months of age, there appears to be a close relationship between mother and child emotional characteristics, with some transmission of maternal emotionality to the child. These characteristics, along with mothers' responsivity in the mother-child relationship, have an effect on the child's emerging skills in elicited play. However, by the time children reach 18 months of age, they have internalized a sense of mothers' emotional availability, and a more verbally oriented and cognitive focus is evident. These children appear more emotionally differentiated from their mothers and are free to begin imitation and identification on a more language-oriented and symbolic level. These empirically demonstrated transformations that take place in the mother-child system when infants are 12 to 18 months of age support various theoretical premises regarding important transitions taking place at this time. Based on this model, it would appear essential to focus on the caregiver-child dyad when working with infants. Mothers' level of esteem and parenting competence, as well as their ability to interact adaptively with their children in play, can provide useful information for both assessment and intervention.
