The House of Dior, founded in 1946, provides a clear case study of the interplay between art and fashion from its early beginning with Christian Dior's (1905-1957) background as a gallerist in Paris from 1928 to 1933 and his close relationships with renowned artists such as Salvador Dali (1904-1989). By examining the influence Dior's practices have had on the House's succeeding creative directors and their emphasis on artistically exhibiting and marketing its collections, this thesis explores how the couturier's early connections with the art world continue to shape the label's direction and showcase the blurred lines between fashion and art. The thesis argues that Dior's co-creations, museological approaches, and fashionscape play a key role in the symbiotic relationship between art and fashion and posits that the House has consistently been a trailblazer, shaping pivotal moments of interconnectedness and pushing the boundaries of the art-fashion nexus throughout history. Various case studies aim to highlight how Dior's approaches establish fashion as an artistic medium and art as a professional field indebted to fashion. Thus, the House represents a broader reality of the art and fashion intersection, illuminating how symbioses can manifest.
