This dissertation aims to resituate Robert Mapplethorpe, Nan Goldin, and Sally Mann's photographs within the particular communities, practices, and social spaces from which they emerged. My study begins from a concentrated attention to Robert Mapplethorpe's Black Book, Nan Goldin's The Ballad of Sexual Dependency, and Sally Mann's At Twelve: Portraits of Young Women, and Immediate Family. The photographs included in these photography books provocatively confronted issues of religious belief and sexuality, motherhood and childhood. Within the languages of the 1980s' "Culture Wars" Mapplethorpe, Goldin, and Mann's projects were read as fueling conservative outrage and an attack on "traditional family values." Until now, these photography books, and these photographers, have been framed for a wider public by the controversy, shock, and censorship that surrounded them in the 1980s. Departing from this, my research explores the circulations and proliferations of Mapplethorpe, Goldin, and Mann's projects within their social milieus of pleasure and their intimate communities that emerged in the 1970s and 80s. I aim to open a new reading of Mapplethorpe, Goldin, and Mann's projects and to link the photographers in more profound ways than the "Culture Wars" claim. The archives of counter-cultural institutes and the long-forgotten publications researched for this dissertation give voice to those who were erased, the places that were overlooked, and the ways of being that were elided by the first readings of Mapplethorpe, Goldin, and Mann's projects. My research calls upon the specific intimate strategies found in the archives that were also simultaneously voiced by scholars of the 1980s. To see Black Book, The Ballad of Sexual Dependency, At Twelve: Portraits of Young Women, and Immediate Family through and within their intimate communities also allows this dissertation to engage with emerging discussions and debates about photography, touching, and feeling, which I see as essential to new understandings of Mapplethorpe, Goldin, and Mann's projects and photography.
