This thesis explores the unfixed or fluid nature of Dora Maar's photographic oeuvre from the start of her career in the early 1920s through the height of her Surrealist production in the late 1940s. Analyzing Maar's dynamic photographic practice, I argue that her photography is multidimensional and transformative, resisting monolithic definition. Using varied theoretical discourses to guide my research, including transnationalism, queerness, and nomadic feminism, I explore and highlight the innovative ways in which Maar's work was created while identifying and examining the unique ways she develops a corpus that functions beyond the Eurocentric heteronormative. Maar's artwork was long overlooked throughout art history scholarship due to the othering she experienced in her lifetime, partly due to the systematic marginalization of women and because her own narrative was overshadowed by the romantic relationships she participated in throughout this period. By investigating Maar's imagery through these various methodological approaches, we can expand our understanding of surrealism and the place of marginalized artists within the art historical timeline. Maar's photographic practice refuses to be set within the binaries of the avant-garde and society, and it is through using each of these discourses that I showcase the diversity and fluidity that define her artwork.
