The absence of a nurturing caregiver-child relationship can have enduring effects on an individual's social and emotional development. Unfortunately, certain environmental influences may challenge a parent's ability to provide the necessary support for their child's optimal growth. Children, inherently sensitive to their parent's needs, may then take on age-inappropriate roles to support the family-a phenomenon known in psychology literature as parentification. This thesis proposes that immigrant children may be more susceptible to experiencing parentification due to a range of sociocultural challenges unique to this population, impacting their personality and identity formation. Through a hermeneutic approach, this study examines historical, theoretical, and empirical literature to provide a depth psychological perspective on the archetype of the parentified child and its constellation in immigrant families. The guiding purpose is to contribute to the existing literature on multicultural competence and offer a road map for psychotherapists working with parentified clients from diverse backgrounds.
