The LGBTQ+ community has endured a long history of oppression and discrimination. Individuals in this community may face obstacles including familial and societal rejection, abuse, neglect, violence, and internal shame and guilt. LGBTQ+ folx are at risk of becoming involved in the criminal justice system due to heightened discrimination, unjust and unfair treatment from law enforcement, and criminalization of various behaviors and mannerisms. This qualitative phenomenological dissertation explored and unearthed barriers to the mental health treatment of incarcerated LGBTQ+ folx in correctional settings through the eyes of mental health professionals. Seven participants over the age of 18 partook in semi-structured interviews and were asked about their professional work with incarcerated LGBTQ+ folx, barriers to mental health treatment, and their experience providing clinical services to this population. Themes reflected interviewees' clinical and professional experiences, logistical and clinical barriers to treatment, and the emotional impact of working in a prison environment. The overarching implications of this research are to influence structural and legislative changes to ensure greater access to mental health services for this population, including improved quality of services, culturally sensitive interventions, and addressing the unique and diverse needs of incarcerated LGBTQ+ folx.
