There are substantial, meaningful connections between the life and art of Hung Liu (1948-2021). However, in recognition of the fact that the art world has often essentialized the work of Asian American artists, this dissertation argues for a framing of Liu's practice that largely excludes the details of her life. I demonstrate how her work blends divergent idioms and artistic dialogues to participate in late twentieth-century cultural conversations related to memory and history, the human experience of spaces, and social identity. Drawing on a variety of theoretical frameworks, I closely examine her art to reveal how it contributes insights to discourses about time, place, and identity. In chapter one, I analyze a selection of Liu's works that engage with issues of time and remembrance. I explore how her art layers senses of temporality, draws on modes of mourning and memorializing, and processes personal and inherited memory. In the next chapter, I analyze her practice through its relationship to the idea of place. I argue that her works utilize physical and pictorial space, evoke disparate sites, and elicit the viewer's interaction to body forth the human experience of place. The last chapter considers how her creative production participates in postmodern understandings of identity construction and expression. I examine how her art reveals the constructedness of gender, plays with the stability of cultural identity, and expands limiting categories of identification.
