In order to explore whether counselors are more effective if they have had the opportunity to work through and resolve past personal issues and which issues interfere the most with providing effective counseling, a case study approach was used in order to gain an in-depth understanding of these dynamics as manifested within one individual. The data showed that no counselors are beyond encountering countertransference experiences and that through a better understanding of a countertransference experience, a counselor could use the firsthand experience to facilitate therapeutic growth instead of hinder it. The data also showed that counselors have to know when to get help themselves in order to best support the client and the therapeutic relationship. Furthermore, one strong form of countertransference to be aware of is when romantic feelings regarding the client surface.
