Population aging is a global issue, and Taiwan has been classified as an aging society since 2017, with older adults accounting for over 14% of the total population. Projections indicate that by 2026, Taiwan will enter a super-aging society, with older adults comprising over 20% of the population. This imminent transition into a super-aging society presents Taiwan with a more pressing challenge concerning aging compared to many other countries. The aging population brings forth issues related to the labor force, an economic shift towards an older demographic, and the need for long-term care, particularly for those with disabilities and cognitive impairments, offering trends and business opportunities in the application of technology to the needs of the aging population. Previous data show that the aging population experiences various physiological and psychological effects related to aging, leading to several age-related health issues. Social support has been identified as an effective means to help older adults adapt to the changes associated with aging. Moreover, technological advancements have introduced various smart technologies, including chatbots, avatars, virtual agents, and artificial intelligence, for potential use by the aging population to address aging-related challenges, emphasizing the importance of gerontechnology in developing technology solutions for older adults. This research aims to address the design challenges encountered in practice and focuses on enhancing the user experience for middle-aged, older, and elderly individuals in caregiving contexts. The primary motivation is to create products with low barriers, user-friendliness, and the ability to stimulate the self-motivation of middle-aged, older, and elderly users. The study centers on middle-aged and older users, employing six types of avatars representing different sources of social support: 1. Family Role - Brother Type, 2. Family Role - Sister Type, 3. Friend Role - Male Friend Type, 4. Friend Role - Female Friend Type, 5. Professional Role - Male Doctor Type, and 6. Professional Role - Female Doctor Type. The research investigates the common design preferences of middle-aged and older users for different avatar types, their preferred interaction topics, and the types of social support that different avatar types provide. This study is intended to serve as a foundational step for future developments in gerontechnology design, such as caregiving robots, and to enhance the user experience for middle-aged, older, and elderly populations while effectively addressing aging-related challenges through technology solutions.
