As a developing Art Therapist, the researcher is curious to understand how the use of collage-making as a process tool aids in the development of personal and professional self. The population the researcher focused on is incoming Art Therapists, showing that collage-making can be a vital tool for processing sessions as well as sculpting a therapist's identity. This population was studied through Arts Based Inquiry. The researcher believes that collaging can be a symbolic representation of the serendipity that happens in session when on the spot, the Art Therapist takes elements that the client or clients present and creates something new from them. This thesis examines how art making enables exploration and development of personal and professional self. The results from this study show that collage helps in identifying these identities, developing them, and merging in appropriate ways. This thesis also helped the researcher discover a third self: the artist self. Other themes also identified are sexuality, cultural competence, and dealing with anxiety. This thesis can be used to gain an understanding of how art processing can help with incoming Art Therapists as they transition during graduate school.
