Additive manufacturing (AM) enables the near-monolithic (excepting connectors) fabrication of passive microwave devices. This text seeks to explore the design capabilities unique to AM in the context of microwave engineering. The work discussed herein, funded by Lockheed Martin Space Systems and the Office of Naval Research, involves the development of new forms of related passive networks and antennas at L-Band and S-Band, including power dividers, omnidirectional tightly-coupled arrays, and a dual-polarized omnidirectional system achieved by retrofitting a previously existing element. The simplified assemblies that can be achieved by monolithic designs help reduce production time and risk of fabrication errors. Developing radially symmetric models, with their identical features arranged around an axis of symmetry, helps offset the increased difficulty encountered in successfully designing complex structures which comply with the constraints of additive manufacturing. The research leading to the devices described here examine ways to exploit these advantages unique to additively manufactured devices.
