Over the course of the twentieth century, puppetry has experienced several periods of renewed interest and growth, and with these different periods have come new methods and techniques for utilizing puppetry in live theatre. The aesthetics of puppetry, the way artists perceive and understand the art form, have dramatically evolved and influenced the way contemporary artists approach it. This study attempts to define twentieth and twenty-first century puppetry aesthetics by examining performances created by members of the Puppeteers of America and participants of The Eugene O'Neill National Puppetry Conference. This study postulates that these two groups can be seen to represent stylistic and ideological extremes of the ways that American artists conceive of puppetry. This study argues that twenty-first century puppetry aesthetics fall within a continuum represented by the disparate aesthetics of the Puppeteers of America and the National Puppetry Conference, and that contemporary artists engage simultaneously with modern and postmodern, mimetic and abstract styles of puppetry.
