Although there are over 44.5 million immigrants residing in the United States (Zong et al., 2019), there is a dearth of research on how to best serve immigrant clients, on preparation of U.S. mental health providers working with immigrants, and on mental health professionals' efficacy in working with immigrants (Holcomb & Myers, 1999). The purpose of the current study was to examine the extent to which attitudes towards immigrants and immigrant threat mediate the relationship between counselors' immigrant-related clinical experience and training, counselor ethnic identity development, and immigrant multicultural counseling self-efficacy. The study uses the Social Cognitive Model of Counselor Training (SCMCT; Larson, 1998) as its guiding framework. In contrast to what was expected, attitudes and perceived immigrant threat did not mediate the relationship between immigrant-related clinical experience and training, ethnic identity development, and immigrant counseling self-efficacy. A direct relationship was, however, discovered between clinical experience and training and immigrant counseling self-efficacy and between ethnic identity development and immigrant counseling self-efficacy. Implications of these findings for theory, research and training are discussed.
