Individuals and groups use language in the process of constructing personal identity, as well as identity within society (Bucholtz & Hall, 2009). In the last decade, terminology used within sexuality research, as well as within lived experiences, has developed beyond the trichotomy of heterosexual, homosexual, and bisexual, aiming to be more specific (Oswalt, Evans, & Drott, 2016). The purpose of this study is to explore the use of the word heteroflexible as a signifier of sexual identity, including the demographics, sexual behaviors, sexual attraction, and attitudes toward bisexuality of those who identify as heteroflexible, in comparison with those who identify as bisexual. The current study sample is composed of 544 participants (141 heteroflexible participants and 403 bisexual participants) who were identified through social media and listservs. The Williams Institute recommends a three-part conceptualization of sexual orientation as the most effective means of inquiring about sexual orientation within a survey (Badgett, 2009). Therefore, participants were asked questions about their sexual orientation through three components: sexual identity, sexual attraction, and sexual behavior. Attitudes towards bisexuality were measured using the Attitudes Regarding Bisexuality Scale-FM version (ARBS-FM). Qualitative questions were asked to participants who identify as heteroflexible to better understand their choice for the sexual identity label. Through analysis of quantitative and qualitative responses, different themes emerged. Heteroflexible participants were more likely to engage in same-sex behavior over their lifetimes compared to engaging in same-sex behavior within the last year. In responses pertaining to attraction, heteroflexible participants acknowledged a same-sex attraction. Heteroflexible participants scored significantly lower on the Attitudes Regarding Bisexuality Scale (ARBS) compared to bisexual participants, meaning a lower (negative) view on bisexuality. This leads to the potential of biphobia, bi-negativity and the stigma attached to bisexuality influencing the decision to use an identity label. This is the first study exploring heteroflexible as a sexual identity label and the first study to explore the comparison to bisexuality. In addition, individuals who identify as heteroflexible have not been studied utilizing the ARBS. Future research should continue to explore heteroflexibility and bisexuality as it relates to each other, as well as other sexual identities.
