This qualitative study used Bowen Theory's eight interlocking concepts for the framework in which to study emotional cutoffs and phenomenology to construct the interview questions. This study focused on emotional cutoffs between mothers and their adult sons or daughters. Ten participants were interviewed to explore their experiences and their meanings of the emotional cutoff in which they were involved. The main focus of this study was whether or not participants desired to reconnect with their biological mother or adult son or daughter. Four of the participants wanted to reconnect, three did not want to reconnect, and three were indifferent. During the analysis of the data, three themes emerged, which were communication: high and fiery, low and indifferent; memories: good, bad, and ugly; and self-evaluation with respect to the emotionally cutoff relationship.
