The central missionary task of making disciples is essentially an educational task. Missiology, as an integrative discipline, draws from theology, history, and social sciences such as cultural anthropology, but it has drawn less extensively from the field of education or learning theory. This dissertation integrates Jack Mezirow's transformative learning theory with missiology, by bringing it into tune with Esther Meek's covenant epistemology. The introduction explains why transformative learning theory and covenant epistemology are chosen as conversation partners for missiology. The second chapter provides an extensive summary of Jack Mezirow's writing, background ideas to his theory, and central concepts in transformative learning theory. Central concepts include meaning perspectives, the ten phases of transformation, domains of learning, reflective discourse, and the purpose of meaning perspective transformation. This chapter also considers problems with attempts to integrate a constructivist learning theory into evangelical Christian thought. The third chapter presents Esther Meek's covenant epistemology, and explores themes within her writing, including the epistemic default, subsidiary-focal integration, interpersoned knowing, the transformative logic of James Loder, the epistemological triad of John Frame, and Polanyi's idea of contact with the real. The chapter then discusses each of the themes in relation to transformative learning theory. The conversation between transformative learning theory and covenant epistemology is termed "covenant transformative learning theory." Numerous prominent missiologists have addressed epistemological issues. The fourth chapter explores the epistemological ideas of Hiebert, Kraft, Moreau, Bosch, Newbigin, and Wan, to locate covenant transformative learning theory in the current missiological discussion. The fifth chapter applies covenant transformative theory to missions practice. It begins with a discussion of the variety of conceptions of "worldview" and proposes a new understanding informed by covenant transformative learning theory. The chapter discusses the relationship between Mezirow's ten phases of transformative learning and the Engel scale, implications of covenant transformative learning theory and the place of authority in discipleship relationships, connects Mezirow's understanding of critical reflection with Hiebert's critical contextualization, and connects Steffen's idea of phase-out in church planting with covenant transformative learning theory. The transformative learning process also provides concepts helpful for cross-cultural adaptation and language learning. Implications of covenant transformative learning theory for missionary preparation and cross-cultural adjustment are also explored. Covenant transformative learning theory is not the only theory deriving from the field of adult education that has relevance for missiology. This dissertation intends to open a path to faithfully integrate learning theories with evangelical missiology.
