This paper will examine what nostalgia is and how it is used as a narrative and world building device that elicits emotion from its audience, its potential to both include and exclude readers from engaging with the themes of a story, and its potential use as an impetus for critical thought. Nostalgia is not merely a longing for the past. It is also a longing for home, however a person defines home. Svetlana Boym in The Future of Nostalgia discusses two types of nostalgia, namely restorative and reflective. The relationship between these two types of nostalgia will be explored through the narrative structure of two novels, Ready Player One by Ernest Cline and A Tree Grows in Brooklyn by Betty Smith. At a time when nostalgia floods public discourse, it is important to recognize its potential to be both an addictive trap from modern society as well as a potential gateway of reflection on that same society.
