The influence of temperature and salinity on Na regulation and nitrogen excretion was examined in Ambystoma mexicanum. Changes in plasma and urine Na, NH$\\sb4$, and urea concentration, and the rates of Na influx, efflux and N elimination were measured after acclimation to eight combinations of temperature (5, 15, 25$\\sp\\circ$C) and salinity (1, 10, 100 mM NaCl). Na flux at 15$\\sp\\circ$C is 2.5 $\\mu$Mol/10g.h. Na fluxes at 5 and 25$\\sp\\circ$C are less than the rates at 15$\\sp\\circ$C and increase with salinity. Little Na is lost across the animals' surface at 5$\\sp\\circ$C; and Na permeability tends to be lower in dilute media than in more saline solutions. Na permeability is greatest at 15$\\sp\\circ$C in 100 mM NaCl; but the gradient for Na efflux is small and only ca. 20% of the efflux is via the epithelium. Urine volume has Q$\\sb{10}$s of about 2 over the 5-25$\\sp\\circ$C range. Renal Na loss increases with temperature in 1 and 100 mM NaCl, but is relatively constant in 10 mM. Rates of N excretion increase rapidly from 5 to 15$\\sp\\circ$C with Q$\\sb{10}$s of 3-4; and is less sensitive to temperatures from 15 to 25$\\sp\\circ$C with Q$\\sb{10}$s of 1-2. Ammonium is the chief nitrogenous waste when water turnover is rapid, accounting for ca. 60% of the excreted N. When water turnover is low, axolotls become ureotelic and accumulate urea. The roles of the gills, skin and kidneys in excreting NH$\\sb4$ and urea were examined. Branchial N excretion is 20-30% of the total, and generally slightly more urea than NH$\\sb4$ is excreted at the gills. The skin eliminates from 30-40% of the waste N and appears to be relatively impermeable to urea. The urinary contribution to the total efflux decreases from 30-40% at 5$\\sp\\circ$C, to a small percentage at 25$\\sp\\circ$C when the medium is dilute. Renal excretion of NH$\\sb4$ is always less than 10% of the N efflux.
