With an increased emphasis on teacher accountability and student performance, it was necessary that students be provided with qualified teachers. Despite the critical importance of employing the most qualified teachers, school districts in Tennessee and across the nation were struggling to find an adequate supply of qualified personnel. This study investigated whether teacher certification affects student achievement in third grade reading. Additionally, this study examined whether there was a combined effect of teacher certification, student gender, and teacher experience. The study sample consisted of 16 third grade teachers from two Tennessee school districts. Data from the Tennessee Comprehensive Assessment Program (TCAP) were analyzed to see if the students of certified teachers had greater achievement gains than students of the non-certified teachers. A gain score analysis of variance (ANOVA) was used to identify significant differences between certified and non-certified teachers for the effect of improvement in student achievement. Results indicated that students of certified teachers had better gain scores than students of non-certified teachers. Further examination of the data resulted in a three-way ANOVA, which was found not to be significant in the students' gains based on the combined effect of teacher certification, student gender, and teacher experience. However, a significant difference was found on the main effect of teacher experience and the combined effect of certification and experience. Implications of the results are discussed. Suggestions for future research are examined.
