In contemporary public education in the U.S., the student demographics are substantially becoming diverse in the classroom, resulting in a mismatch in the racial and cultural composition of the teaching force. Given the current situation, mathematics teacher educators raise a concern about the ways to mitigate the disconnect between students diverse experiences and those of teachers and to prepare future mathematics teachers for effectively working with culturally and linguistically diverse (CLD) students. Furthermore, persistent mathematics achievement gaps between CLD students and their White peers called for the need to incorporate Culturally Responsive Teaching (CRT) into mathematics teaching to improve mathematics proficiency for CLD students. This dissertation aims to understand and explore how elementary pre-service teachers (PSTs) perceive their own Culturally Responsive Teaching Self-efficacy (CRTSE) in teaching mathematics to CLD students, and in what ways PSTs transform their CRTSE when they are introduced to Culturally Responsive Mathematics Teaching (CRMT)-embedded instructions in the teacher preparation program. To do so, the researcher designed and provided three CRMT intervention sessions for elementary pre-service teachers about CRT-embedded mathematics teaching. For data collection, a mixed research method was used, including pre-and post-surveys as quantitative data and in-depth interviews with four selected participants, along with their discussions, artifacts, and reflections during the intervention sessions, as qualitative data. The quantitative result provides statistically significant improvements between CRTSE pre-survey and post-survey among elementary PSTs. Also, they showed meaningful advances in their self-efficacy in the capability to implement CRT in their mathematics teaching. The findings from the qualitative data revealed that CRMT intervention sessions helped elementary PSTs understand the importance of CRT lessons and how to effectively prepare for them in their future mathematics teaching. The findings suggest that PSTs enhanced their self-efficacy in implementing CRMT and cultivated a more culturally responsive mindset, shifting away from deficit-based thinking toward CLD students. While the intervention sessions assisted PSTs in gaining their confidence in implementing CRT practices in their future mathematics teaching, there remains a need for more in-depth and consistent CRMT practices and learning experiences in teacher professional development.
