This study examined the characteristics, wants, and needs of middle school teachers in North Carolina in an effort of determine what they want and need to be successful in the classroom and to do their best teaching. It focused on middle school teachers in grades six to eight and compared National Board Certified Teachers and non-Board Certified teachers in different stages of the educational career cycle. The study investigated teachers' perceptions on administrative support needs, professional development needs, personal and professional characteristics, and career cycle stage. It found that teachers in both groups studied wanted and needed more individual and collegial planning time, adequate materials and supplies, respect as professionals, smaller class size, and increased salaries. As a result of the regard given to the National Board Certification process, a special focus was on areas where National Board Certified and Non-National Board Certified teachers identified differences in perceptions. Specific attention was given to looking at frequencies and correlation between factors that may identify the wants and needs of quality teachers and to how these factors relate to professional and personal characteristics. The overriding question was if National Board Certification made a difference in what North Carolina middle school teachers wanted and needed to be successful. Six hundred middle school teachers, half Board Certified and half Non-Board Certified, received surveys that had also been used with teachers in other grade levels as part of a larger comprehensive study. This particular blended study contained both quantitative and qualitative components and used a stratified random sampling of teachers from North Carolina's three geographic regions. Thirty in-depth, individual interviews were conducted, half Board Certified and half non-Board Certified, in a purposeful look at differences and extremes in opinions expressed on the surveys. Results indicated that the two groups differed in several significant areas. The National Board Certified teachers tended toward items that supported higher levels of professionalism, reflection, leadership development, and autonomy while Non-National Board Certified teachers tended to cluster toward administrative and parent support, and adequate materials and supplies.
