Adverse childhood experiences are one of the greatest unknown public health crises of all time. The impact of these experiences on both physical and mental wellbeing has been well documented over the years. It has been estimated that billions of dollars are spent every year on complications from adverse childhood experiences, including treatment for PTSD. There is a lack of comprehensive treatment for those who have adverse childhood experiences, which results in PTSD. This mixed methods, mainly qualitative phenomenological study set out to understand the impact of sand tray therapy in encouraging healing from adverse childhood experiences. A total of 16 individuals, all with self-reported adverse childhood experiences, were asked to complete six sand tray therapy sessions in Baltimore, Maryland. Data collected from the pre and post PCL5 demonstrated a statistically significant decrease in symptoms. Data collected from the self-reports and formal interviews, demonstrated that individuals felt the use of sand tray therapy offered a more positive form of therapy that allowed participants to use miniatures to explore what issues were present in a way that felt more powerful. Individual participants reported a quicker time working through presenting symptoms and gaining insight into other ways to view their past. This research concluded that sand tray therapy offers an additional modality to work with those who have PTSD because of adverse childhood experiences. Sand tray therapy provides a safe and protected space for individuals to engage in healing without needing to know their whole traumas. Moreover, by offering training to practitioners, sand tray therapy could serve a diverse population in several different modalities such as group, family, and couples.
