The purpose of this study was to research the influences of early childhood care providers' characteristics (education, years of experience, and professional development) on Fragile Family children's cognitive and behavioral outcomes in Kindergarten. An Expost facto secondary comparative study using a matched sample from the Fragile Families and Child Well-Being data set (FFCWBS) was completed. FFCWBS' study participants were an at-risk population sample with three-quarters of the participants unmarried and living in poverty. Previous research with this data set focused on thechildren's health, the relationship between the mother and the father, absent fathers, and political implications. In this study, quality of care measures were also taken into consideration. Children from the Fragile Families sample were found to have cognitive outcomes that were positively related to early childhood care providers' characteristics (EC education in college and professional development) as well as the quality of care measures (positive relationship with the children, positive communication with the children, caregiver's use of adult language with the children, observed writing in the classroom, large group reading, and small group reading). Their behavioral outcomes had mixed results. The results of this study indicate that children from Fragile Families need access to high quality early childhood programs in order to offset the adverse experiences of living in poverty.
