Adults with intellectual disabilities (ID) have needs for mental health treatment as many in the general population do. However, they are underrepresented in psychological services. Furthermore, existing options tend to rely heavily on verbal abilities, virtually excluding people with severe and profound levels of ID from treatment. The present study documents the utility of sandtray therapy, which is a form of play therapy, as a way of circumventing verbal requirements and offering a more accessible modality of therapy for adults with ID. After four participants engaged in sandtray therapy, they reported significantly increased well-being and significantly decreased psychological distress. Furthermore, the support staff of several participants noticed improvements in their behavior post-treatment. The remarkable improvements in outcomes were demonstrated in both quantitative and qualitative measures.
