The experiences of registered play therapist supervisors integrating supervision theory in play therapy supervision has not been researched. Recent changes in the registered play therapist credentialing program require play therapy supervision from a registered play therapist-supervisor. However, very little is known about play therapy supervision, especially the utilization of a specific supervision theory to guide the supervision sessions. A generic qualitative research design was utilized to gather the descriptions of experiences of registered play therapist-supervisors' utilization of their chosen supervision theory. The population sample included 10 registered play therapist-supervisors who are members of the Association of Play Therapy. Thematic analysis was used to analyze and interpret the data collected from the interview transcripts. Two themes identified from the data included contingency of foundational knowledge and an individualized application based on supervisee knowledge. The study revealed a lack of knowledge and understanding of supervision theories and their application to the supervision process. Future research could further investigate how the use of a supervision theory impacts the development of the supervisor, particularly in benefitting play therapists.
