The aim of this study was to understand the impact of sandtray therapy on group climate and therapeutic factors in a residential substance abuse treatment facility. 169 participants were randomly assigned to either receive cognitive-behavioral group treatment or sandtray group treatment covering specific topics on core issues related to addiction. After each group, they were asked to complete the Group Climate Questionnaire-Short (GCQ-S) and the Therapeutic Factors Inventory-19 (TFI-19). Observers in each group filled out the GCQ-S as well. The sandtray groups scored significantly higher across all levels of the GCQ-S and the TFI-19. The implications of this research indicate that sandtray group therapy should be incorporated as a part of substance use treatment.
