This thesis explores the architectural and control algorithm design of a hybrid balancing battery management system to test if a new form of BMS is more effective than conventional passive balancing and utilizes renewable solar energy. Two balancing techniques, active and solar, are researched, combined, and innovated beyond their respective typical control and hardware requirements to create a more efficient BMS. Battery model simulation was used to decide the hardware specifications required to achieve the desired results, test against the market standard, and estimate system performance and energy efficiency. The design was built and experimentally tested to confirm the simulation conclusions. Both the simulation and prototype experiment showed positive results that outperformed the conventional passive balancing methods used in the field today. The impact of this research shows that implementing this new hybrid balancing architecture in battery management systems can lead to a longer battery pack lifespan, which leads to reduced waste and longer operation time, faster charging times due to the energy harvested from solar power, and reduced energy used from electrical grids because of the use of renewable solar energy. The longer operational time means that systems that employ this architecture will have an extended range and will not require charging as often as traditional systems. This architecture boasts faster charging times due to solar power assistance, which means less strain on electrical grids.
