There is a lack of knowledge with respect to radiological or nuclear disasters. The lack of knowledge and understanding contributes to ongoing psychological problems that occur due to an incident that should be improved with clear crisis communication. Contributing to the issue is the reality that much of the current crisis communication research is limited to organizational communications. The goal is to improve crisis communication to reduce casualties during a radiological or nuclear disaster. The research examined the relationship between crisis communication methods, types of communication, and risk perception and sought to determine if there was a correlation. A literature review examined previous crisis communication knowledge and theory, and a questionnaire was distributed to adults to obtain new information. The literature review demonstrated the need for radiological/nuclear disaster communications improvements. A quantitative research design was used to gather information, and a survey was used to obtain information. The general population, aged 20 - 64, was the focus, and they responded to hypothetical questions about pre- and disasters to determine the effect of crisis communication. The results indicated that pre-disaster communication within the local community influenced disaster communication. The overall implication is an ongoing need to study disaster communication related to radiological and nuclear incidents and include both top-down and local community communications.
