The data processing systems for radio astronomical observations require significant resources to process increasing signal bandwidths. This is true for both single dish spectroscopy, in which the received signal is converted into a spectrum and averaged, and VLBI observations, in which data is stored at the full sample rate for later processing. In this thesis we introduce the design, implementation and deployment of the new backend system for the telescopes of the ARO, the 10m SMT on Mt Graham and the 12m telescope on KP, which are used in both VLBI and spectroscopy modes. The developed hardware is based on a Xilinx RFSoC, packaged into a low-cost evaluation board, the ZCU111. As implemented, the board can accept four input channels of 4GHz of analog bandwidth using interleaved ADC pairs, enabling it to process the next generation of receivers at these telescopes. Both spectroscopy and VLBI modes are implemented on the same system, enabling it to replace the obsolete spectrometer and VLBI systems at both sites, which improves the maintainability and cost effectiveness of the backend. It includes narrow-band and wide-band spectrometers and can transfer time samples to a data recorder at a rate of 64Gbps.
