This thesis is the first-known research effort linking Social Identity Theory (SIT), Self-categorization Theory (SCT) and lifestyle magazine readership. The lifestyle magazine genre includes articles and editorials concerning travel, fashion, trends, food, etc., that target specific audiences. SIT and SCT describe how people select a preferred social identity, as well as how they confirm and bolster preferred identities. This research used in-depth interviews of 23 Southern Living magazine readers to determine how they define the southern lifestyle and southern social identity, and if they use Southern Living to confirm and bolster southern social identity. Interviews produced two categories of southern characteristics: internal (friendliness and openness, hospitality and welcoming, tradition, and pride in the South) and external (home decor, food, accents and being born and raised in the region, gathering and entertaining, and transplant southerners). Internal and external characteristics are discussed as ways southerners build community and relationships within a southern lifestyle framework. This research demonstrates that SIT and SCT can be used to investigate the relationship between magazines and readers by showing how Southern Living readers perceive themselves as southerners and how Southern Living readers use content to confirm and support southern social identity. Future research areas are identified and suggested.
