Multifunctional carboxylic acids are considered as potential replacements for the current wet strength resins in the paper industry which are suspected carcinogens. Several multifunctional carboxylic acids were examined in this study. One of them, butanetetracarboxylic acid (BTCA) increased the wet strength by 65%. This wet strength improvement was due to the crosslinks between the fibers. Attempts to reveal the exact location of crosslinking sites by comparing the wet strength in never-dried pulp and rayon fibers were unsuccessful. The crosslinking of fibers was monitored by determining the swelling of the fibers as water retention values (WRV). To gain an insight into the chemical nature of the crosslinking the reactions of multifunctional carboxylic acids with cellulosic fibers were followed by using both potentiometric and conductometric titrations. Polymeric titration after the BTCA-curing reaction was also studied. Curing resulted in limiting the accessibility of the charges on fibers especially to the high molecular weight polymer.
