In recent decades, states have undergone significant transformations in their international security environments. A new form of institutionalized security cooperation, known as defense cooperation agreements, has expanded rapidly, involving 140 countries in a dense network of over 1000 active treaties. There has been an unprecedented surge in the construction of border walls worldwide. The world has also witnessed a more visible role of alliances as an instrument of domestic security. My dissertation looks at how these changes in international security politics affect domestic political stability, including conflicts between political and military elites, and anti-government armed uprisings, in three inter-related projects. The first essay examines how the proliferation of defense cooperation agreements affects civil-military relations by facilitating the flow of external rents into domestic politics. The second essay investigates the impact of the increased border fortifications on local armed conflicts, focusing on how they diminish rebels' access to cross-border support and foreign sponsorship. The final essay underscores the role of alliances as a platform for security subcontracting, and how their redistributive consequences affect regime survival in authoritarian politics. These essays collectively explore how governments navigate changing external security environments to enhance their prospects of remaining in power.
