The United States Space Force is the newly established branch of military service that is still establishing much of the supportive functions required to operate independently. One of those functions is establishing its own Professional Military Education (PME) to train its members throughout their careers. This research provides qualitative feedback as to what military members of various ranks and backgrounds that are currently conducting Space Operations for the Department of Defense esteem as necessary training for leadership development in this unique operational domain. Rather than just copy the programs that already exist for other branches, the Space Force members should establish leadership development education that supports the unique leadership requirements that Space officers require to be successful. The data for this research was collected through an open-ended questionnaire distributed to uniformed members conducting space operations in various capacities to gain qualitative feedback on what leadership traits are necessary to develop in Space Force officers and where the current gaps in training are with recommendations for solutions. The 19 responses provided insight from a variety of perspectives but certain themes were constructed through a thorough qualitative analysis. The major trends discovered included less dependency on distance learning, more focus on Joint Training and Emotional Intelligence, and leveraging industry opportunities and academia into military education for a more well-rounded implementation. These findings indicate a need for intentional development of leadership PME for Space Force leaders to acquire the skills needed to be successful in this unique and evolving operating environment. These responses, although only capturing a small sample size of the total force, can be provided to the Strategic Training and Readiness Command as some recommendations from members actually conducting the operations on what they see as value input into Space Force leadership development.
