The Army National Guard is a part-time component of that military that is constantly working to recruit and retain members to fulfill its mission. This qualitative case study included eight participants from one National Guard unit in a state in the Pacific Northwest who described their perceptions and experiences. Three research questions centered around leadership characteristics and culture within their unit, connection with unit leaders, and challenges to organizational retention. McMillan and Chavis' (1986) Sense of Community Theory and Greenleaf's (1970) Servant Leadership Theory were used to analyze the data to determine if leadership impacted soldiers' intent to reenlist or leave the organization. Four themes emerged from the data analysis: connecting to leaders, connecting to others, challenging times, and differing experiences. Three conclusions impacting retention included: personal commitments of part-time Army National Guard may overshadow positive impacts of leadership connections, leadership training beyond tactical preparation is needed for those responsible for soldiers, and community among peers is as strong as leadership connections.
