Each year, thousands of veterans and active-duty service members suffering from PTSD commit suicide. Many are reluctant to seek treatment for PTSD due to stigmatization surrounding mental health treatment among military populations. Consequently, there is a need for novel treatment modalities that account for inaccurate perceptions of mental health treatment. Cranial electrotherapy stimulation (CES) is a promising treatment whereby electrical waveforms are self-administered via electrodes placed on the earlobes. While CES has shown promise in early clinical trials, it is largely unknown whether CES is an effective treatment for PTSD. Therefore, this qualitative systematic literature review aimed to explore the utilization of CES devices in the treatment of military service members and veterans diagnosed with PTSD. The use of CES to treat PTSD-induced depression, anxiety, suicidal ideation, and sleep disorders was explored through an in-depth examination of twelve studies focused on U.S. active-duty military service members and veterans. The findings of this study indicate that CES may be effective for treating these PTSD-related symptoms. CES also reduced participants' pain and improved quality of life and social and occupational functioning. Additionally, CES had a low occurrence of adverse side effects, some of which included headaches and site discomfort. This study has numerous implications for adopting CES as a treatment modality for those with PTSD. Including CES in a treatment plan may, in some cases, reduce suicidal ideation and improve quality of life.
