The post- war democracy in Iraq has become a platform for an on- going debate among scholars, politicians, foreign policy makers, and human rights activists. The bottom line of these debates revolves around a central question whether the U.S. occupation of Iraq in 2003 has succeeded in transplanting democracy in the country. This thesis is an attempt to address these queries and pinpoint the factors that affected the practice of democracy in Iraq. However, the importance of this thesis lies not only in the fact that it adds a new layer of discussion to the field of democracy, specifically the one related to Iraq., but also to bring about an answer to the thesis questions that other works of literature barely came across. The thesis concludes that the Iraqi democratic institutions fell off the universal standards of modern democracy. Robert Dahl's seven criteria of polyarchy were used as an anchor to test the progress of democracy in Iraq since 2003. It is found that most of the major elections conducted in the country failed to fulfill these criteria. In this regard, the thesis lays out two main reasons to address the dilemma of democracy in Iraq, which are the endemic corruption and the emergence of Islamic radical groups. These have been the primary, but not the exclusive, triggers of sectarian violence, political instability, and economic stagnation, which have led to the failure of democracy in Iraq.
