This qualitative study is a historical investigation into the origins of conflict in Liberia between 1980 and 2003. The Liberian Civil War, as it is commonly known in academic and political literature was the years of conflict and regime change in Liberia during the 1980's and early 2000's. Although traditionally the Liberian Civil War is understood as between 1989-2003, this study takes into account the regime change in Liberia dating back to 1980 and traces the Liberian Conflict from that moment onward to 2003.The perspective of this study is from an African Perspective of History. This means that this study starts and remains from the perspective of African people, influenced primarily by African sources, and takes the African way of being in the world seriously as a source for historical construction. It places the events in Liberia, in conversation with events in other parts of the African continent during this period and applies a similar interpretative lens to Liberia as has been applied to other African countries in a similar dynamic. The findings of this study conclude that the Liberian Conflict was not the result of ethnic tension or ancient intra Liberians tensions. Instead, it was a result of a concerted and long historical effort to undermine Liberia's sovereignty.
