The automobile industry is trending towards an all-electric passenger vehicle future. The strength of this trend can be seen with increases in the adoption rates of electric vehicles, increases in accessibility to supporting infrastructure and governmental policies favoring the advancement of clean energy technological initiatives such as the electric vehicle and the discouragement of fossil fuel use. Large vehicle manufacturers are pledging to transition to all electric fleet. Large corporations are also either pledging to make their fleets carbon neutral, zero emission or fully electric. Another interesting development in the automotive industry is innovation in battery technology. New technologies like the Nickel, Manganese, Cobalt, and Aluminum (NMCA) battery outperform other batteries and are available to the market. Battery innovation is resulting in price reductions which enable the delivery of higher capacity from batteries while reducing the costs of use and ownership. The trends described above and the transition to an electrified passenger vehicle fleet is centered on wealthy and developed nations, which presents an extraordinary challenge to developing nations. A dominant source of the vehicle fleet in developing nations is the used vehicle market in developed nations. Therefore, as the makeup of the vehicle fleet in developed nations shifts from fossil-fueled to electric, the composition of the used vehicle market will shift as well. However, electric vehicles are unsuitable for developing nations because the generation capacity of these nations is currently inadequate to support existing electricity demands and increasing demand from the electric vehicles would overwhelm the grid. Most developing nations are at a disadvantage due to the limited funds available to upgrade electrical infrastructure to meet rising demand. It is therefore important to plan and prepare for passenger vehicle electrification before issues of scarcity of suitable vehicles constitute a national emergency. This research contributes a new, prioritized list of relevant antecedent and moderating variables customized to Nigeria, a representative middle income and developing nation. This research also contributes a new, easily accessible tool to help decision-makers prioritize actions as well as introduce new insights into the relationship between the antecedents and moderators, and recommendations.
