The number of people and facilities using Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning (HVAC) systems is increasing at a rapid rate. While the electric grid may be able to handle the current HVAC loads, it is probable that in the future, new power plants will be necessary to handle the newly added loads. One way of ensuring extra power plants are not needed is by shifting electrical loads to off-peak electric hours. One of the most promising ways to shift electrical demand is the usage of thermal energy storage (TES). TES allows facilities to use the same power that would have been used to cool or heat a building and shift the time of use to a more ideal time. While shifting the load with TES would be an excellent solution, many of the current TES systems have non-ideal properties that make TES impractical for many facilities. Sensible heat systems are commonly very large and require high startup costs. While latent heat TES systems combat the issues of sensible TES, latent heat systems commonly have their own set of issues. Latent heat TES systems commonly use a phase change material (PCM) with poor thermal conductivity leading to poor ability to handle thermal loads. This thesis will show research that was performed in an attempt to combat the issue of low thermal conductivity in organic phase change material (OPCM) by introducing a functionalized nanodiamond (FND) additive.
