The concept of the "Golden Age" of children's literature (1860 to 1920) as a period of Romantic escapism and childhood innocence is flawed because it erroneously conflates the Victorian texts with their mid-twentieth-century Disney adaptations. Recent scholarship seeks to return to the primary texts and challenge the myth of the Golden Age, but this dissertation demonstrates how the Disney innocence myth came to dominate and retrospectively create the Golden Age during the 1950s and 1960s. Drawing from Linda Hutcheon's three modes of adaptation and Patrick Cattrysse's descriptive approach to adaptation studies, I theorize "adaptive play" as a transmedial process that reveals the perceived intentionality as well as the slippages and inconsistencies that can occur when adapting a text from one medium to another. I explore Disney film and theme park adaptations of Golden Age texts, such as Lewis Carroll's Alice's Adventures in Wonderland (1865), Robert Louis Stevenson's Treasure Island (1883), and J.M. Barrie's Peter and Wendy (1911), to show how these aftertexts have influenced critical accounts of Golden Age literature and the construction of childhood innocence. I conclude that Disney's mid-century adaptations largely iron out the complexities of Golden Age texts, resulting in a version of childhood that reinforces adult-child hierarchies and subjugates the child in a state of nondevelopment. This dissertation contends that adaptations, especially those as potent and influential as Disney's revisions of these classic texts, need to be brought into academic discourse to reveal the powerful impact they have on mass culture and critical discourse's perceptions of not just Golden Age children's literature but childhood itself.
