This thesis will discuss the low admission rates of black graduate students within the design industry and the possible connection to the decimal amount of black designers in academia. Without proper guidance or access to higher learning institutions, black students are at a disadvantage to teach and mentor others within the community. In order to have a more diverse industry overall, proper representation in academia is needed, which may not be possible without these black students attending graduate programs and receiving proper mentorship at a young age. The proposed solution is to curate an outreach strategy to nurture and guide students towards programs that make sense for their career choices - both at the undergraduate and graduate level. This can be accomplished by using intentional and engaging mentorship that will expose black students to different career paths that they would not have had the opportunity to on their own.
