The focus of this paper is a study of the transient high burnup fuel analysis capabilities of the subchannel thermal hydraulic code CTF for application in a reactivity-initiated accident. A literature review was conducted to determine that a rod ejection accident presents the highest risk to plant safety. A sensitivity study was conducted to determine what phenomena occur during a rod ejection at high burnup that are not present or accounted for in current codes or NRC limits. Following the identification of these phenomena and quantities of interest to track them, acceptable limits for high burnup are found from previous data and studies, as well as from current NRC limits. Several experiments are modelled in CTF to determine the codes' high burnup capabilities and the results analyzed. Initial results modeling INL TREAT tests are used to select applicable correlations for future cases. More in depth tests from RIA benchmarks are modeled, but results are not ideal due to current lack of available boundary conditions. Results from this benchmark are also modeled in CTFFuel and the results are better. A post-processing tool is developed to determine whether fuel has failed based on the existing and proposed burnup dependent limits. Additional studies for improvement of the current CTF model are proposed, for further calculations in CTF and the potential for coupling with other codes is explored.
