It investigates how interactions between humans and canine in designed spaces support rehabilitation. The project aims at designing a facility center to implement a program that unites the emotional wellbeing of visitors, children and dogs through integrated uses of the space. Bringing traditionally secluded shelters into urban social situations and activities helps increase public awareness of animals. In addition to a setting devoted to human rights, the thesis lays out a formal design manifesto for animal rights. As a testing ground, it uses an urban canine experience that integrates teaching, visitor exhibition, and shelter in an exterior/interior setting, creating a prototype for future adoption and rehabilitation facilities in nations like India. The resulting paradigm combines therapeutic typologies and healing components seen in special education institutions while addressing and reinforcing the fundamental concepts and constructions of animal shelters. As an abandoned urban icon in a populated neighborhood, the Smallpox Hospital on Roosevelt Island, New York, was chosen as the site for its expression of converging conditions (political, professional, and economic) and as platform for divergent responses (urban, architectural, and social). The old structure's lack of a roof and floor slabs, together with the existing vegetation growing within, creates an interior open area that inspired a walk-in ecotone. A communal nexus is created by having a canine rescue that prioritizes animal rights and freedom on a site beside a park that honors the four freedoms of humans.A visitor's center for the island visitors and a Child Animal Therapy program for children with behavioral or developmental issues are both part of this reciprocal healing, to further highlight the possibility for mutual rehabilitation.
