The benefits of exercise are well known yet many people fail to engage in sufficient exercise behavior. The lack of behavioral execution may be influenced by self-control issues. Current trends in the literature indicate that self-control is essential for exercise behavior. This study is focused on understanding the relationship between self-control subtypes and exercise behavior. Participants completed measures of self-control, exercise behavior, attraction-antipathy toward exercise, exercise-related boredom, and self-reported behavioral automaticity as a measure of habit strength. It was hypothesized that starting exercise requires more self-control, and so self-control by initiation would be more strongly associated with exercise behavior than self-control by continuation (1A) or self-control by inhibition (1B). Self-control by initiation was correlated with exercise behavior (r = .286, p < .001). Self-control by inhibition (r = .297, p < .001) and self-control by continuation (r = .325, p < .001) were also correlated with exercise behavior. Hence, we failed to support hypothesis (1A) and (1B). Hypothesis (2A) predicted that boredom would moderate the relation between self-control by initiation and exercise behavior. This hypothesis was not supported; boredom did not influence the relationship between selfcontrol and exercise behavior. Hypothesis (2B) was also not supported; attraction did not moderate the relation between self-control by initiation and exercise behavior. Lastly, Hypothesis (3A) was not supported. Habit strength did not moderate the relation between self-control by initiation and exercise behavior. These findings suggest that all self-control subtypes are related to exercise behavior. Lastly, habits and attraction had a positive correlation to exercise behavior while boredom to sports had a negative correlation to exercise behavior.
