This paper argues that narrative and storytelling can be used as a resource for those living with rare disabilities. Using my experiences living with Myasthenia Gravis, a rare autoimmune disease, as a gateway into argument, I display the critical theories and storytelling methods against memoirs of authors living with rare disabilities and show how aspects of their memoirs function to benefit disabled communities and the depiction of disabled people in literature. I delve into questions within the realm of narrative theory, pondering how the narrative functions of disease in disability studies can become praxis for narrative medicine and storytelling-based healing. This paper pinpoints aspects of narrative medicine that contribute to medical healing and what aspects hinder it, while using my experiences as a patient advocate to shape and intersect the understanding of narrative theories in disability studies, especially when considering those living with rare disabilities. The research formulated in this paper explores how the topic of rare disease differs from other forms of narrative in the humanities; and to that end, how rare disease functions in creative constructions of text, such characterization, storytelling, depiction, and truth.
