The use of psychological terminology and jargon can often lead to confusion or misunderstanding in therapeutic settings with clients. This can impact comprehension for both the therapist and client and at times, feel pathologizing to a normal human experience. The purpose of this study was to explore using the client's language, specifically metaphorical language in psychotherapy sessions. This study aimed to address three research questions: 1.) What is the purpose of using metaphorical language in session? 2.) How is a metaphor created in session? 3.) What are the benefits of using metaphorical language in session? A multi-analytic approach of integrating narrative analysis and thematic analysis was used to address the research questions. Pre-recorded archival data of one psychotherapy session was used during analysis. Findings showed multiple purposes and benefits using metaphorical language in session. Additionally, there were multiple components to the metaphor co-creation process. Findings are further elaborated on in chapter four, where the researcher described the narrative analysis, thematic analysis, and the linking and comparing process. Chapter five discusses a critical understanding of the study, suggestions for future research and implications for practice.
