Core relationship themes and attachment styles are both believed to reflect an individual's internal working model. Each focuses on pervasive and persistent patterns of relating to oneself and others that guide the formation of future relationships. This study used the Core Conflictual Relationship Theme (CCRT) method to determine if people with similar attachment patterns relate consistent themes in their day-to-day relationships. Themes consistent with attachment theory did emerge for secure and insecure groups though not for each individual attachment style. Results show that securely attached participants felt that others responded to them by being interested romantically, by being admiring and fair. Overall, the secure group felt more satisfied and loved in their relationships. Conversely, the insecure group expressed the desire to get revenge in their relationships and to resist being dominated by their significant others. The insecure group did not feel that others were responsive to their needs and rather felt that significant others were superior, dominating and manipulative. A look at the relationship between attachment style and fantasied relationship themes showed that insecurely attached individuals expressed the desire for security, comfort and self-confidence. However, despite these positive wishes, in fantasy they reported responding to others with resentment, frustration and rejection. The secure group overall related more positive themes than the insecure group thereby confirming the relationship between negative experience and insecure attachment.
