This document delves into the rich history of preludes and fugues during the Baroque Era, focusing on composers beyond Johann Sebastian Bach. While Bach's Well-Tempered Clavier stands as the pinnacle of the genre for pianists, this study sheds light on the works of lesser-known composers such as Dietrich Buxtehude, Johann Adam Reincken, Johann Pachelbel, Georg Bohm, Nicolas Bruhns. These composers contributed significantly to the development of procedures and forms for preludes and fugues, offering unique and distinctive compositions. By exploring their works, this document aims to provide a broader perspective on the diverse landscape of these works, enriching the understanding and appreciation of this genre in the piano repertoire. In the first chapter, I investigate the historical background of preludes and fugues, offering insights into their evolution and significance during the Baroque Era. The second chapter examines period instruments such as the clavichord, harpsichord, fortepiano, and organ, juxtaposing them with modern pianos through a brief comparative analysis. The third chapter presents an analysis of selected preludes and fugues by the composers listed above. The fourth chapter explores performance practice and pedagogical aspects. Here, discussions encompass elements such as articulation, fingering, tempo and rubato, ornaments, and pedal usage, providing valuable insights for performers and educators alike.
